Mouth Call Performance Log

How to Use the Mouth Call Performance Log

I highly recommend that you keep track of the calls that you create. There is nothing worse than finding that perfect recipe and then trying to recreate the same call 365 days later, only to realize that you have no record of its existence. Even if a call is a dud, I still keep a record of it, so that I know what not to do. To understand how the performance log works, please read below. Print off as many copies as you need so you can always record your results.

  • Call Name

    • In the case of a successful sounding call, give the call a name. This may sound foolish, but when you make a call for a friend, it’s easier to remember what they purchased. For example, “Hey, I loved that Wicked Hen call you made me last year, I’d like 2 more.” Verses “Hey, I loved that red call you made me last year, can you make me a few more?” Umm, what one was that again?

  • Cut Profile

    • On the picture of the call, sketch out what your cut looks like. You can copy a cut from an existing call or make your own unique cut. Give the cut a name on the line as well. Reference this link for common mouth call cuts.

  • Frame Size

    • Record your frame size used (example - adult, wide, kids).

  • Tape Color

    • Record the tape color used.

  • Reed Color/Thickness

    • Record the reed thickness and color used. Sketch out the reed overlap on the call image.

  • Side Tension

    • Record the decimal number that you came up with when stretching your latex (example - .240” or .205”).

  • Back Tension

    • Record a level of how much back tension you gave the call (example - low, medium, high). This is rather speculative and can be interpreted by your own means.

  • Results

    • Next to the categories cutt/cluck, yelp, purr, kee kee, & overall, give your call a ranking. The ranking system can be unique to your needs such as a numeric scale of 1-5 with 5 being best or just a worded ranking such as poor or very good. Use whatever makes the most sense to you.
